Mauna Loa, or “Long Mountain,” is a volcano located on the big island of Hawai’i and is part of the Hawaiian Island chain. It is the world’s largest active volcano rising 13,680 feet above sea level. It is a shield volcano with a volume of approximately 18,000 cubic miles.
This image shows a Landsat view of Mauna Loa. The volcano is shown in dark grey and purplish-black in the middle of the island. Vegetation appears green and clouds are white.
This Landsat ETM+ mosaic image was created using bands 7, 4 2, and the panchromatic band. Mauna Loa is found at 19° 28’ 46.3” N latitude 155° 36’ 9.6” W longitude.
