In the early morning hours of December 22, 2008, the earthen wall of a containment pond at Tennessee’s Kingston Fossil Plant gave way. The breach released 1.3 million cubic meters (1.7 cubic yards) of sludge, infiltrating a nearby river and damaging dozens of homes.

Bou Craa, Western Sahara

Phosphate deposits are one of Western Sahara’s few natural resources. At the Bou Craa phosphate mine, 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) from the coastal city of El Aaiún, abundant, pure phosphate deposits lie near the surface.

Beginning in 1932, Dutch engineers completed a dike across the Zuiderzee to create a freshwater lake. Engineers later used pumps to drain water from the area, creating expanses of usable land known as polders. These images show changes in the land cover in one such polder between 1980 and 2007.
