This MODIS image of the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia shows fires as red dots superimposed on a surface reflectance product. MODIS has thermal detectors uniquely designed to detect fires as hot as 500K without saturating. Also visible along the coast are phytoplankton, which show up as blue-green swirls.
