The dissolving traces of ship tracks mix with clouds over the Pacific Ocean surrounding the Kuril Islands in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on July 2, 2003. The Kuril Islands stretch in a southwest trending arc between Sakhalin Peninsula (top center) in Russia and Japan to the south. These volcanic islands are blanketed with snow in the winter, but are shown here bearing summer's green.
