Dust Obscures Liaoning Province, China
540 x 342 JPEG
Published May 2, 2002
This pair of Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer images, acquired 16 days apart, covers the Liaoning region of China and parts of northern and western Korea. They contrast a relatively clear day (March 23, 2002) with one in which the skies were extremely dusty (April 8, 2002). In the later view (right-hand image), the dust obscures most of the surface, although the Liaodong Peninsula extending between the Bo Hai Sea and Korea Bay is faintly visible at the lower left. Wave features are apparent within the dust layer.

Volga Delta and the Caspian Sea
720 x 480 JPEG
Published January 24, 2002
Russias Volga River is the largest river system in Europe, draining over 1.3 million square kilometers of catchment area into the Caspian Sea. The brackish Caspian is Earths largest landlocked water body, and its isolation from the worlds oceans has enabled the preservation of several unique animal and plant species. The Volga provides most of the Caspians fresh water and nutrients, and also discharges large amounts of sediment and industrial waste into the relatively shallow northern part of the sea.
