Fires and smoke in Mongolia and Russia

On September 22, 2002, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite detected dozens of fires smoldering in Mongolia (bottom) and southern Russia (top). Several of the fires in Mongolia are associated with large burn scars, which appear deep brown against the tan landscape. At top right is the southern portion of Lake Baikal.
