Dust storm blowing from Grand Erg Oriental, Algeria

A shroud of dust can be seen traversing the golden hues of the Sahara Desert in this MODIS image made from data acquired on November 10, 2001. (Clockwise from top-left) The Northern African states of Libya, Egypt, Sudan, and Chad, respectively, are subject to fierce winds and dust clouds. At the right of the image, the Nile River can be seen cutting its way through Sudan and Egypt before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea at top.
