SeaWiFS: Lake Balkhash

These two SeaWiFS scenes of the area around Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan were collected on the 18th and 27th of April, 2000. Note the general brightening of the southwestern portion of Lake Balkhash. This could be caused by an influx of sediment-laden spring melt water from the mountains to the southeast. You can see that the snow cover in those mountains has decreased during the time between the two passes. Also, Lake Sayram in northwestern China (lower right corner) went from being ice-covered to mostly ice-free during the same time period.
