Wisconsin Supercell Thunderstorm Track

Shortly before noon on May 12, 2000 a supercell thunderstorm tracked across rural northeastern Wisconsin unleashing 100 mph wind gusts, baseball sized hail and an F1 tornado. The small towns of Omro, Chilton, Valders and especially St. Nazianz were hardest hit with downed trees, destroyed homes and barns and extensive hail damage to crops, livestock and trees. This false color Landsat 7 browse image shows vegetation as light green and bare soil and urban areas as pink and gray. Acquired one week after the storm, the image clearly shows the path of destruction as a pink band (crop damage and trees stripped of leaves) extending from Lake Winnebago eastward to Lake Michigan on the south side of the city of Manitowoc. Storm related property damage and loss exceeded $35 million, but no one was killed or seriously injured.
