Small Tropical Cyclones Contribute More to Annual Rainfall

Published January 19, 2008

Though relatively infrequent, tropical cyclones make a significant contribution to the seasonal accumulation of rainfall in the southeastern United States. In a recent study, Dr. Marshall Shepherd and collaborators at the University of Georgia found that tropical storm systems contribute an average of 13 percent of the total rainfall during the hurricane season.

Phytoplankton surround the Falkland Islands

Published January 15, 2008

Millions of tiny, single-celled plant-like organisms ring the Falkland Islands in this photo-like image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on January 13, 2008. These organisms, called phytoplankton, reflect light, coloring the ocean with whimsical swirls of blue and green.

Cloud Streets Across Caspian Sea

Published January 15, 2008

South of the loosely packed ice in the northern part of the sea, parallel rows of clouds line up along the north-south axis of the wind. These “streets” of clouds form when cold air blows over the warmer, moister air that sits over the water.
