Nighttime Eruption on Anatahan

When the satellite passed over Anatahan, it observed variations in thermal radiation (heat) coming from the surface and the atmosphere. Cooler surfaces are darker and warmer surfaces are brighter. The brightest, hottest spot in the scene is the summit caldera of Anatahan Volcano, which has been active off and on since 2003.

Biting cold seized much of southwest Asia throughout January and into February 2008. Land surface temperatures were as much as 20 degrees Celsius cooler than in previous years. The overall blue tone of the image reveals cold temperatures throughout the region, but the most intense cold was in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

Dust Storm off Morocco

In this image, two largely parallel dust plumes blow off the coast. The northeast plume is more intense—thick enough in places to completely hide the water below. The other plume is thinner and shows faint wave patterns near the coast.

Perth is the capital of the state of Western Australia, and it is the largest city of the southwestern part of the continent, with an estimated population of over 1.5 million (as of December 2006). The downtown area of Perth and the surrounding suburbs are located on flood plain deposits of the Swan and Canning Rivers, which flow through the center of the metropolitan area. Perth enjoys a Mediterranean climate, where the summers are hot and dry, and winters are cool and moist.
