In true-color imagery, it is often difficult to discern rivers amid the dense vegetation found in places like the Congo Basin. In this false-color MODIS image of the area from May 9, 2002, colors have been enhanced to bring out the signal of water, and rivers and lakes appear very dark, while vegetation appears as various of shades of gold and green. In the southern part of the image, red dots mark the location of active fires, and land that has been burned looks bluish-gray.
